The reference document for the Manufacture of Fabricated Metal Products sector

Food and Drink Manufacturing The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) is developing a sectoral reference document on best environmental management practice for the manufacture of fabricated metal products (except machinery and equipment) sector.

This activity is part of the JRC work on identification of best environmental management practice and development of EMAS Sectoral Reference Documents for different sectors.

Manufacture of fabricated metal products (except machinery and equipment) is a broad industrial sector with considerable environmental impacts. It covers all the manufacture of pure metal products (such as parts, containers and structures), usually with a static, immovable function.

The research focuses on the main direct and indirect environmental aspects of fabricated metal product manufacturers and on initiatives/measures/techniques/actions implemented by frontrunner (best performing) organisations within the sector. On the basis of this research, the document will extensively present best environmental management practices (BEMPs), environmental performance indicators and benchmarks of excellence for the most relevant processes/activities of the manufacturing of fabricated metal products and their main direct and indirect environmental aspects.

Work plan

The JRC hired an external contractor, VITO NV (Belgium), in cooperation with two other belgian companies (Syrris and Agoria), to produce a background report. In the meantime, the JRC established a Technical Working Group (TWG) comprising experts in environment and manufacture of fabricated metal products to gather and review information and to validate the best environmental management practices, environmental performance indicators and benchmarks of excellence. The kick-off meeting of the TWG took place on 21-22 September 2016 in Brussels.

On the basis of the feedback collected at the kick-off meeting of the TWG and provided subsequently by several TWG members, the JRC, with the support of external contractor BiPRO (Germany), has developed the background report into a draft best practice report to be discussed with the TWG at a final TWG meeting scheduled for 27-28 November 2017 in Brussels.
