The criteria development process for this product group is finalised.

This is the project website of a pilot study which will prepare the ground for the implementation of environmental product policy instruments related to the product group "Sanitary Products". In particular it will focus on developing a basis for future criteria for the EU Ecolabel. The study is being carried out by the Joint Research Centre's Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (JRC-IPTS) in cooperation with DEKRA and PE International. The work is being developed for the European Commission's Directorate General for the Environment.

The EU Ecolabel for Sanitary Products will promote the production and consumption of products with a reduced environmental impact through the life cycle and it will award the best performing products in the market.

The EU Ecolabel criteria will be developed based on all the requirements addressed in EU Ecolabel Regulation 66/2010. The criteria will be defined on the basis of the environmental information derived from Life Cycle Assesment and product oriented environmental performance assessment studies. Different environmental, safety, technological and functional aspects will be considered. Moreover, during the EU Ecolabel criteria development continuous wide consultation is foreseen with experts and stakeholders of manufacturers, supply chain industry, consumer organizations and NGOs ensuring  European wide applicability.

The study welcomes active participation from stakeholders. If you would like to be involved in the consultation process, you can do so through the website, by registering as a stakeholder. The registered stakeholders will be regularly informed about the progress of the study, have access to preliminary results and draft documents and can respond to questionnaires and/or participate at stakeholder meetings.
